Markowski, miraculously, was there, just beginning his night shift, and got Nathan on a gurney with the help of two aides, the Buick almost as big as the ambulance on duty in the garage.
âMy god, what happened?â
âShot. Twice. A lot of blood.â
âI can see that,â Markowski said as the aides began wheeling Nathan in. Swinging doors. âWho is he?â
âMy uncle.â
Markowski looked up. âGunshot wounds, we have to report. Itâs the law. Iâd get fired.â
âI know. Itâs a big favor.â He looked at Markowski. âIâd owe you. Anything. Just save him.â
âGod, the carâ What the hell happened?â
âHe wasnât the only one. Who got shot. I know, itâs a mess.â
âAnd all over you,â Markowski said, nodding to Danielâs face. âYou better get washed up before the nurses get a look at you. Iâll get somebody to clean up the car. Itâs a specialty we have here. You should see the ambulance sometimes. Not so pretty, the way people die. What name?â
âJohn Doe.â
Markowski looked over at him.
âI know. Itâs a big favor. Iâll get him out of here as soon as we can move him.â
âWhat about your shoulder?â
âJust a scratch. They missed.â
âCome on. Weâll take a look.â
âHim first. Heâll die.â
âTheyâre already working. Stabilizing him. Itâs the protocol.â He turned to face Daniel. âIâll do what I can. But if he needs major surgeryââ
âWeâll find someone. Weâre not going to let him go.â
âWhat was the shooting about, if Iâm allowed to ask.â
âGangs. Out in the Badlands. He got caught in the cross fire.â
âThe cross fire.â
âThatâs right,â Daniel said, looking at him.
âYou brought him all the way here from the Badlands? Why?â
âNobodyâs looking for him here. And youâre here.â
âItâs nothingâpolitical, is it? Old times. I canât get nearââ
âNo, nothing like that. He runs a nightclub. Other things. Come on, weâre wasting time. Heâs tough, but heâs been shot. Do this for me, Karl. Please? Iâll owe you.â
âI donât do it for that. Iâm a doctor. So.â
Nathan was already out, hooked up to an IV drip.
âHeâs lucky,â Markowski said, bending over him, examining the wound, his face now covered by a surgical mask. âA few more inches and the heartâ All right. Letâs get it out and see if we can stop the bleeding. You wait in there.â He nodded to another room. âOrders. Iâve got an open wound here. I canât risk sepsis. Li, take a look at his shoulder. Make sure itâs clean. Heâll need a dressing. Look at this, right near the artery.â
Sergei came back while the nurse was swabbing Danielâs shoulder with antiseptic. An examining room with cabinets of bandages and metal trays of tongue depressors, an old EKG machine in the corner, sprouting wires.
âWe have to stay here,â Daniel said. âYou get Irina? How is she?â
âHow is she. The end of the world. She wants to come.â
âWhat did you tell her?â
âWeâre with a doctor. Not where. Iâll call later, when we know how he is.â
âYou tell her to go somewhere safe?â
âThen how do I call? I sent some Russians over.
